5 Excellent Live Performance Tips from Morgan Sully
I was just reading Morgan Sully’s excellent “Memeshift” site when I came upon his post covering 5 live performance tips. I see countless threads on the Ableton forum and elsewhere with people agonizing over which performance-ready laptop to buy, whether the Launchpad is comparable to the APC for live control, etc., but people who have been playing out for a long time understand that it’s often more useful to simply cover the basics without going overboard on the fancy stuff. For example, forget the latest and greatest gear for a moment and instead focus on cutting useless bass frequencies so your adoring fans can actually hear the detail in your music!
Here’s a great quote from the end of the post that I think we could all take a hint from:
“There are some schools of thought that say sticking to any one paradigm like this in composing means you become outdated. I come from the school of thought that with computer music production – slower is better. I have more time to ’sit’ with a particular technology/software/hardware and REALLY get to know it – no A.D.D. music making for me thank you very much. It’s what I love.”
Kudos to Morgan for putting together a solid post. If you plan on playing live any time soon and are looking for a checklist to start with and expand upon, you could do a lot worse than follow his advice.
