Ableton Live Quick Tip: Dusting Off the Impulse Device
Remember Impulse? I know there are plenty of people who rightfully swear by it, but there are many more new Live users who purchased the program well after the introduction of the newer stuff like Drum Racks, Sampler, etc., who just haven’t had the time or inclination to dig into the older devices.
Impulse has become somewhat of a hidden gem in Live, capable of some mind-bending timestretch effects which are perfect for drums and ambient sounds.
Also, keep in mind that there’s nothing stopping you from combining Impulse with the Drum/Instrument Rack devices, for instance. If you take this a step further, you can even create a default device preset for the Drum Rack where it loads up Impulse devices into its cells, allowing you to create an organized matrix of Impulses. If you’d like to see a tutorial on this, let me know in the comments section.
In this video, I go over a couple basic things to whet your appetite, including practical advice on playing an Ableton device with the computer keyboard (with velocity!), local and global time stretching and transposition in Impulse, and adding a dash of randomness to the pitch of your drum sounds to keep things sounding more organic than static sample playback would normally allow:

I’m curious about the Drum Rack full of Impulses. How would you handle the MIDI mapping or sequencing for an instrument like that? Because, at least as I’m picturing it in my head, each cell in the Drum Rack is mapped to a note, and each Impulse is mapped to eight notes… is there a way to carry it over and have that sort of control of each Impulse, aside from adding MIDI tracks that route into the instrument via different Impulses?
Or maybe my question is a little simpler when I think about it: what would be useful about having Impulses in a Drum Rack?
I’m probably going to do a tutorial covering usage of multiple Impulses inside a rack using the MIDI effect devices as helpers. Using these methods, you can actually remap the cells in an impulse to response to any notes you choose.
Sounds interesting.
YES !
this is the stuff i want to see
not the make a cool house sound stuff you find around the internet
i use drum rack but this makes me try impulse
LOL, I feel your pain, Vincent. I’ll do my best to get this considerably more involved tutorial together in the near future. It definitely won’t be a “quick” tip!
Nick …do it like Nike….!!!!
Looking forward to the Impulse inside a rack toot and the Chains/FX toot …keep up the good work !!!!!
smash
Do it! I am sure that multiple impulses within a drum rack plus midi effects and internal return channels and chain selectors will make an awesome control preset. Do it Nick, I have watched and learned from every other one of your tutes.
Hey! Yeah, looking forward to the impulse / drum rack tute, cuz atm actually can’t see the point of draggin impulse into drum rack..
Sounds intriguing; lots of potential for being creative. Looking forward to the tutorial!
Hey Nick, I hope you are well! Any chance of this tutorial? Cool!
